5 reasons to attend VA PrideFest, as written by our employees

Come on out to Virginia PrideFest

Virginia PrideFest is coming up this Sunday — and we wanted to show it some love. So, we asked our employees to jot down a few reasons why you should show up and support.

With pictures. ;)

1. There’s strength in numbers

“Everyone should show up for PRIDE — as a loud and proud queer, an ally, or anything in between. To stand against the regressive, anti-trans and anti-LGBTQI+ legislation on the table, waning corporate allyship, and increase in threats of violence — this is the year to show up. To show the Richmond LGBTQI+ community that they are seen and important. To give visibility to the mass of people these laws affect. And to remind everyone that love is love. Plus, it’s a bangin’ dance party.”

- Page Jensen-Slattengren (she/her), Associate Creative Director

2. You’re joining a tidal wave of love and acceptance

“I cried joyfully holding hands with my sister, my number one straight ally, during the first pride event I ever attended in 2010. My parents weren’t the easiest to accept that I was a lesbian. So, when a group of straight-presenting parents came along the parade route giving hugs and holding signs of reassurance that they would stand up for me, I felt an all-encompassing tidal wave of love and acceptance that brought me to tears and lifted my heart. I had never encountered such support, acceptance, love, laughter and joy — all amidst a crowd with collective and unabashed pride about being themselves. If you’re an ally reading this — especially a parent — I encourage you to attend pride this year. Your acceptance and support is needed and will positively impact our community.”

- Steph Shaw (she/her), Account Director

3. Community

“You don’t feel alone. Pride events serve as a reminder of the progress we have made in the fight for LGBTQI+ equality and are a testament to all the brave individuals who have defied societal norms, challenged discrimination, and paved the way for a more inclusive future. By attending, we honor this progress and recommit ourselves to the ongoing work of dismantling prejudice.”

- Janet White (she/her), Chief Financial Officer

4. It’s super joyful and festive

“This event exudes an infectious energy that uplifts and inspires. Attending a pride event offers a chance to be part of incredible displays of creativity, amazing people, inclusive local and national businesses, music performances, and more. The pride celebration is a feast for the senses, leaving attendees with a sense of euphoria and hearts filled with happiness.”

- Chase Maszle (he/him), Digital Producer & ERG Lead

5. It’s for everyone

“Pride has always been something special to me. It wasn't until I went to my first PrideFest as a teen that I realized how big and vibrantly beautiful our community is, and I'll never forget that moment. Seeing and being seen so openly, without shame or doubt, is such a powerful feeling. It's especially important for young queer people and their families. But you should go even if you're not in the queer community. Simply being yourself and present tells folks, 'I see you, and you matter.'”

- Collier Phillips (he/him/they/them), Social Content Creator
